PleurX Catheter Placement
A PleurX Catheter or indwelling chest tube can be used to drain a persistent fluid build up in the chest.
Indications for PleurX Catheter:
-
Non-Malignant Effusions:
It's also used for recurrent, symptomatic non-malignant effusions, such as those caused by congestive heart failure, hepatic hydrothorax, or other conditions that cause respiratory distress or impact quality of life.
-
Post-Lung Transplant Effusions and Infections:
In rare cases, the PleurX catheter may be considered for post-lung transplant chronic effusions or pleural infections, but should be used as a last resort.
-
Recurrent Effusions After Thoracentesis:
If a pleural effusion returns after fluid removal through thoracentesis, the PleurX catheter can be considered for ongoing drainage and symptom relief.
-
Trapped Lung:
In patients with a trapped lung (where the lung is unable to expand due to fluid), the PleurX catheter can help relieve symptoms and allow for continued expansion.
-
Failure of Previous Pleurodesis:
If a patient has undergone pleurodesis (a procedure to prevent fluid buildup) without success, the PleurX catheter can be used for drainage and symptom management.
-
Rapid Reaccumulation of Fluid:
When pleural fluid rapidly reaccumulates, causing respiratory distress, the PleurX catheter can provide ongoing drainage to relieve symptoms.
-
Malignant Pleural Effusions:
The PleurX catheter is a common treatment option for malignant pleural effusions (MPEs) associated with shortness of breath or other symptoms, especially when medical management or pleurodesis has been unsuccessful.
